Carolyn Murdock
Carolyn Murdock went to her heavenly home surrounded by her loving family and friends on Dec. 13, 2023 at 1 p.m. at the age of 99.
Carolyn has been a faithful member of the Laurel First United Methodist Church. She played the piano in the primary department for many, many years. She also volunteered at the church and the Jones County Community Hospital.
Carolyn graduated from the Laurel City Schools and Jones County Junior College.
Carolyn was a former Miss Laurel. She was a gifted ballet and tap dancer, as well as a talented pianist who played beautifully until a week before her death. She brought much joy to all who heard her play.
Carolyn was a much-loved secretary and co-worker at Lamar School and Mason School for 28 years.
Carolyn Skaggs married her high-school sweetheart Jack Murdock on Jan. 13, 1944.
After Jack graduated from flight school, they traveled together for further training until Jack was deployed to England as a B-17 Bomber Pilot in World War II.
After the war, Carolyn and Jack made their home in Laurel where they lovingly raised their children.
She is survived by her daughter Jamie Murdock Coffield (Scott) of Temple, Texas; sons Bill Murdock of Laurel and Jim Murdock (Lisa) of Petal; and grandchildren Brian Coffield (April) of Temple, Kate Coffield (Max Martinez) of Austin, Texas, and Jackson Murdock (fiancée Hillary Colbert) and Hannah Hadley Murdock of Brandon. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren who reside in Texas, Soren Coffield, Atticus Coffield, Lily Coffield and Aidan and Connor Gillian.
A special thank you to Deaconess Hospice and Carolyn’s loving and faithful caregivers Coretta Purdie, Quinett Posey, Sonya Armstrong, Rolisha Strong, Alicia Butler and Liz Freeman, and longtime friend Elvie Husband. Also, a special thank you to Rickey Nicholson.
A celebration of life will be Tuesday, Dec. 19, at First United Methodist Church in Laurel with the visitation beginning at 11 a.m. followed by the service at noon. Interment will follow in Lake Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Laurel First United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
Pallbearers will be Bill Murdock, Jim Murdock, Brian Coffield and Jackson Murdock. Honorary pallbearer is Bobby Stevens.
