Although Snapchat's principal feature is Snaps, it isn't devoid of other fun and exciting upgrades. It brings fellow Snapchatters closer and lets them stay connected in real-time with Snaps, chats, and much more.

What Are Snapchat Charms?

Users were previously awarded Snapchat Trophies for performing different activities. However, they were discontinued and replaced by Snapchat Charms. Snapchat didn't entirely kill the idea of trophies but instead, put a different spin on it.

Whereas the trophies were a token of individual achievements, Snapchat Charms represent the relationship between any two Snapchat friends (or group members in a group chat).

Charms are private, available only for mutual contacts. They're not viewable if someone's blocked or hasn't accepted your request. Charms are also personalized— which is why there's a separate set of charms for each friend (or group).

How to View Snapchat Charms

Although Snapchat Charms don't serve much purpose or unlock special Snapchat features, it's always fun exploring how Snapchat has awarded you for hitting a Snap milestone with your friend. Here's how you can discover charms with another fellow Snapchatter:

  • Launch Snapchat on your phone.
  • Swipe right to access all the active chats. Alternatively, you can access these via the chat icon on the bottom-left of Snapchat's home screen.
  • Now select a chat, preferably with a friend you talk to or exchange snaps with regularly. Tap the avatar to open their profile.
  • Scroll down to the Charms section where all charms are displayed.
  • You can scroll through the entire selection. Tap on a charm if you feel like reading its detailed description.

    • How Do You Earn Different Snapchat Charms?

    Snapchat rewards users when they fit specific criteria for the charm. Usually, the more you interact, the higher the number of charms you get, such as Snapstreak, BFs, and Snap Legends.

Regardless, It's Their Birthday! charm signifies that it's your friend's birthday; Birthday Twins indicates you and your friend have birthdays less than seven days apart. If there's a six-month gap between your birthdays, you both are entitled to the Half Birthday Twins charm.

    Zodiac Signs and Birthstone Charms

    These charms are all about astrological signs, compatibility, and birthstones. If two people are born under the same sign, Snapchat awards them with It's a Sign charm. The Astrological Sign charm gives insight into your friend's personality and which unique qualities they possess based on their sign.

    Similarly, the Sun Sign Compatibility charm assesses compatibility based on both of your signs. It's a fun way to learn what the stars say about your friendship. The Friend's Birthstone charm illustrates your friend's birthday month with its respective birthstone. For example, a shimmering, blue Aquamarine stone signifies all March birthdays.

    Joining Snapchat Charms

    Snapchat's all about commemorating the beginning of user's journey on the app. It's why the app assigns users different charms based on the year they signed up.

    Snap OGs are those who have been using Snapchat since 2013, the year Snapchat launched Stories. But if you joined a year later in 2014, the same year chats were introduced, you get the Since Way Back charm. From 2015 onwards, users receive a Joined in 2015 charm, Joined in 2016, and so on.

    Snap Score Charms

    These are based on the average Snap Score between two Snapchatters. There's a different title for each level, and you'll get bumped up as your score progresses with increased interactions.

    If you're Snap Legends, you're already sitting atop the throne. Snapchat rewarded your regular app use with five stars and the top-most position in the hierarchy. Then comes the Snap Heroes charm bestowed to those who're beginning to use the app more enthusiastically, but their scores aren't high enough for the top level. They receive four stars.

    The next ones are the lower-tier charms: the Snap Masters charm (three stars), Snap Sophomores charm (two stars), and Snap Newbies charm (one star).

    Friendship Charms

    When two friends stay on the top of each other best friend's list consistently for two months, Snapchat rewards them with a Super BFF charm. This looks pretty cute but be wary of the Mutual Besties charm. The latter one only appears when their best friend is the same as yours, and so in a way, they might be competing for your BFF charm.

    In another case, two friends earn a Mutual BFs charm if they have a mutual best friend, although it doesn't show who the mutual Snapchatter is.

    New Friends Charm

    You'll receive a New Friends charm when you've recently become friends with someone.

    Keeping in Touch Charms

    These charms reveal the frequency of interaction between two Snapchatters. However, these are rough estimates as Snapchat provides no clear guidelines. If you've been friends with someone but never talked, Snapchat labels you with the Shy Guys charm, wanting to encourage a conversation.

    When you've lost touch with someone for over a year, Snapchat gives you an It's Been Forever charm to remind you to reach out. When it's just been a few months since your last interaction with a friend (six to 12 months), Snapchat serves you a reminder through the It's Been a While charm.
